Helane Morrison is the Managing Director, General Counsel, and Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) at Hall Capital Partners. Hall Capital, located in San Francisco, is one of the state’s most successful investment companies. Helane has been with this women-run firm since 2007, moving on from her position at the Securities and Exchange Commission.
She earned her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and her Juris Doctor from the University of California at Berkeley. When she passed the bar exam, she began working as a law clerk for the Seventh District of the U.S. Court of Appeals, working for Hon. Richard Posen from 1984-1985 and Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun from 1985-1986. She joined the Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin firm in 1986, working there for ten years. She became partner in the firm in 1991 and she focused mainly on business litigation and private securities actions defense.
In 1996, Helane Morrison moved on to take a position as head of enforcement at the San Francisco SEC office. She stayed there until 1999, where she was responsible for fraud litigation, regulatory issues, and securities law enforcement. She was also responsible for representing the SEC to the news media and other government agencies.
Helane Morrison joined Hall Capital Partners in 2007 partly because of their diverse leadership position in the financial industry. Because investors had not regained their confidence in the market, her goal at Hall Capital is to help restore others’ confidence in the markets, believing that her current position is where she can do the best work. Her many years of experience as a journalist, serving her government, and fighting corporate crimes has made her a leader in fighting against corruption.
After spending a decade running her own practice, Helane realized her passion lay with representing those who were fighting against corruption and pulling the cover off of corruption. After going to the Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin firm, she was put in charge of hundreds of employees within the firm. She made partner after just 5 short years, showing her dedication to helping others fight corruption.
Helane Morrison has accomplished many milestones within her successful career, including uncovering sales of fraudulent securities to military personnel, exposing destruction of papers for companies like Ernst & Young, and spearheading the investigations against Fortune 500 executives who were known for being “immune to punishment.”
